Battery Second Degree

Sheriff Lance Bonds states that on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, Deputy Tony Trammell, was dispatched to a residence on Highway 66 West for a report of a domestic dispute.  Dispatch informed the deputy that a female had a knife and was attempting to stab a male victim.

Upon his arrival, the deputy observed a female lying face down on the side of the highway with a male sitting on top of her holding her down. The female defendant was identified as Chere Ann Staggs (33) of Mountain View.

As the deputy approached, the female came to him stating that the male subject had been the aggressor and had been beating on her.  She appeared disoriented and as she was staggering towards the deputy, he smelled a strong order of intoxicants coming from the female.

During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Staggs was the aggressor during the incident.  According to statements received at the scene, Staggs and the male victim began arguing at their residence.  After several minutes, Staggs became violent.  Staggs knocked over lamps and started throwing items in the bedroom and continued into the living room where she knocked over a table.

During this time, Staggs grabbed a knife and started approaching the victim. The victim then said he attempted to take the knife away from her and she cut the back of his left-arm and the front of his left-arm.  She then left the residence and the victim followed her.  She was attempting to run out in front of vehicles and that was why he was holding her down when we arrived.  During the course of the incident, a juvenile male was present in the home.  The child was present during the battery as he related events to the deputies.  Staggs was transported to the Stone County Detention Center without further incident.

Sixteenth Judicial Prosecuting Attorney Holly Meyer has formally charged Staggs with:

COUNT 1:                   DOMESTIC BATTERING IN THE SECOND DEGREE

(A.C.A. § 5-26-304(a)(2)

ENHANCEMENT:       OFFENSE COMMITTED IN PRESENCE OF A CHILD

(A.C.A. § 5-4-702)

A bond has yet to be set.
